Talking about fire can be a scary subject for kids. Keeping it simple and making sure your children know and understand that getting out is the top priority. 1. Explain to your children that fire is dangerous but having a plan and practicing it will help them be more confident in knowing what to do.
2. Give them tips like Stop, Drop and Roll and stay low to the ground if there’s smoke.
3. If a portable fire escape ladder is part of your plan make sure your child(ren) knows how and when to use it.
4. If you have a meeting place in your plan in case your family gets separated make sure it’s not hard to find.
5. A fun way to help your children engage in the plan is to draw up a map. Make sure to have 2 escape routes from each room. (This may include a window) Then have your kids trace a route on how they can escape each room.
